Dark violet Spinel oval weighing 2.82 cts, from Tunduru, Tanzania.
The violet color often associated with luxury, because of it’s status as the color of Roman emperors, and as color worn by monarchs and princes. Certain luxury goods, such as watches and jewelry, are often placed in boxes lined with violet velvet, since violet is the complementary color of yellow, and shows gold to best advantage.
With a hardness of 8 and no cleavage planes, spinel is a tough and durable gemstone suitable for any kind of jewelry. Precious spinels appear strikingly clean and free of inclusions. This impression is due among other things to the lack of liquid inclusions.
